(Oops!) Moving Mistakes! :-)

Moving is an important transitional step in our lives. We take it very seriously and work very hard to make sure it goes smoothly, but even then, many of us commit very common errors. Consider the following mistakes and be sure to avoid them:

(Don’t) Pack heavy objects in large boxes. Heavy items should go in smaller boxes—depending on their size—and one of the worst mistakes you can make is putting too many heavy objects in large boxes. This will make unloading them much more difficult, especially if you feel the need to move them yourself later on.

(Don’t) Forget to label all your boxes. Your precious items deserve your attention. Take the time to label them accordingly with their contents and instructions for your moving company. Also add the room you want them placed in upon arrival at your new home or office. This will allow you to unpack room-by-room and avoid dragging boxes around the house.

(Don’t) Forget to measure doorways and openings at your new location. The worst feeling in the world is arriving excited at your new home only to realize your boxes and furniture won’t make it through the front door! It sounds comical but it happens!

(Don’t) Pack anything dangerous. If you need to move anything acidic, corrosive, or explosive, you should contact your moving company first to address the issue. All moving companies reserve the right to not move certain materials due to legal and physical risk.

(Don’t) Forget to notify those who need to know you’re moving. Changing your address can cut down on added frustrations like missed bill payments or lost mail. Be sure to notify the post office, all creditors, and magazine or subscription-based organizations.

(Don’t) Misplace your bill statements, quotes, or paperwork. These are all important and you should have them available at all times to discuss with your moving company. Consider organizing for your move by creating a folder of information, dates, statements, and agreements with your moving service.

(Don’t) Blindly pick a moving company without any research into the business. Look for established moving service companies that are professional and accessible to the client. The easiest way to recognize a good company is the contact information they provide and the quality of the testimonials found on their website.

Make the Moving Day Easy

Anyone with moving experience can tell you how quickly the big day can become stressful. There’s so much to do and so much to get out the door that those moving can be overwhelmed by the experience. Take the time to review some tips on avoiding moving day stress:

Don’t be afraid to move some of the smaller items and boxes yourself. If you do this right, you can remove much of the clutter from the place you’re moving. This will allow your moving company to operate with greater ease around your house also.

Mark all of your boxes either with a number or a brief description on the outside, such as “dining set,” or “kid’s toys.” Any permanent marker will do. Notes like these will keep you from pacing your new location and asking yourself, or your frustrated spouse, “Where did I put the china set?”

Keep a complete inventory list. Yes, this can be demanding but it’s also a great way to make sure you have everything you need. Accounting for everything will also allow you to check what you need at your new location.

Dedicate time to moving before the big day! Organize yourself accordingly and be ready for when your moving service arrives. You should always be on-site to help us supervise your move. We’ll handle your items with the utmost care but Ridgewood Moving Services welcomes you to be a part of the process.

Removing distractions is never a bad idea. If you have younger children who require constant observation, it’s a good idea to find either a babysitter or a relative who will look after them for the day. This will give you the chance to focus on your move.

Take a break. Although Ridgewood Moving Services will do the work for you when it comes to getting things out the door and safely to your new home or office, big moves can be draining both emotionally and physically. Try to relax and enjoy the transition.

Consider doing minor work at the location you’re moving to before your stuff arrives. Painting a room before furniture arrives or throwing down carpets first can help you avoid doing double the work. It’s always a chore when you load furniture into a room, decide you need a carpet under it, and then have to move that furniture again to add the carpet. Cleaning prior to a move can also help preserve the items you’re adding.

You should never be concerned about the size of your move but be aware that not everything has to go with you. Throwing old and unnecessary items out is fine. So is giving items away to neighbors or charity.

Interested in making your big move that much easier? Please contact Ridgewood Moving Services by phone at 1-800-397-1445, or by e-mail: info@ridgewoodmoving.com. Moving Your Piano

Moving a piano can be a major operation and one that the average owner should not consider doing themselves; the headache you get from trying to navigate it through hallways and doors won’t be nearly as bad as the back ache you’ll get from trying to maneuver a huge piece of ear-pleasing furniture. Pianos are beautiful, functional and excellent additions to every home, but moving them can be a disaster for the untrained individual.

Light pianos way well over two hundred pounds and most belong in the range of three hundred to four hundred pounds. The weight contained within them is most often not evenly placed, which will make moving it an awkward and dangerous exercise. You should contact a professional moving service that specializes in piano removal and relocation if you want to preserve the richness in tone and unmarked beauty of your piano.

Picking your piano moving service will require you to consider your options and choose the most reputable and experienced. It is a good idea to contact your prospective mover and question them on how they pack their pianos and store them for the journey. Common practice requires a moving company to use layered padding to protect the outside as well as the inside of the piano. Legitimate piano movers will use specialized piano moving equipment and tools to offset a piano’s awkward weight and size.

Once you’ve decided to hire a moving company and transport your piano, you should still me mindful of other responsibilities as an owner. A tragically overlooked issue some people deal with is not knowing where exactly to place their piano on arrival, or not being able to position the piano in a new setting. These could be for several reasons including laziness, lack of foresight, refusal to decide on where the piano fits best, or an error in measurement. Your new location needs to fit your old furniture and you should take the time to find the best spot for your most stunning furniture.

As stated above, pianos are a special breed of furniture and require serious consideration. Remember that when you place your piano it must be accessible and not lined up directly against a wall. This will sterilize the acoustic effects of your instrument and you should know that a piano needs space to be appreciated both visually and audibly. So long as you do a little research into the right moving service and seriously consider where the piano should be placed, your move should be easier than you previously imagined.

Storage Checklist: Ridgewood Moving

Moving and storage require important decisions to be made about storage plans. Because of this, we’re dedicating this month’s Ridgewood Moving newsletter to important criteria that will decide whether or not your storage experience is outstanding, mediocre, or regrettable.

Considering storage for the first time? Please review our brief checklist:

Flexible storage plans – As life takes unexpected directions, so too do storage needs. Whether you’re planning on storing items for a limited or prolonged period, you should carefully review the contractual agreements you’re prepared to sign. Not all storage facilities are the same and some will not offer flexibility when modifying your storage terms. Also consider whether or not your storage provider offers custom solutions or special help for specific valuables (such as pianos, or other large or particularly special items). Also be sure you’re getting the most out of your space and money. If you are redecorating, preparing an addition, staging a property or just need some extra space, a good warehouse is one that addresses your flexible needs.

Testimonials and experience – Testimonials are easy to find but don’t be fooled by the handful of accounts some moving and storage services provide. You should be more inclined to pick the place that has a lengthy list of highly personalized testimonials. Another good indicator for prospective customers is the date of establishment for a moving company. By this logic, the older the company is, the more appealing it is because of its long-term success. Bad moving and storage companies don’t last long in such a demanding industry, after all!

Convenient location and accessibility – When selecting where you want your items to be stored you should always consider proximity. Is it convenient? Can you visit the facility when you need to? How quickly can you have items stored or removed? All of these questions should be answered before you select a facility. Also ask if it’s possible to visit the site and see it directly.

Security – Always be certain that your storage provider can guarantee the security of your items. It is not inappropriate to ask what security measures are in place and whether or not there have been previous incidents on-site. The best facility is the safest.

Cleanliness – Some storage companies will carefully wrap and prepare your belongings, making your storage experience a completely customized affair. By individually wrapping items we protect them against possible environmental contaminants like dust and actual physical damage.

Climate control – One of the most important options available. Any provider can simply store an item in a warehouse, but a specialized storage company can also offer climate control (often at no extra charge). This ensures that humidity does no harm to your precious items.

Accountability – Make sure you know who is responsible for your items once they’re out of your hands and stored at a specific facility. Some of the most reliable providers are those with site-specific phone numbers (often complimented by a 1-800 toll free number). Beyond this, the owner should be identifiable and in most cases websites should introduce you to that individual.
